Constitution Day

A play in two acts 

 This is my first play after a hiatus of a few years.  I always wanted to write a play featuring James Madison, but I had little idea how it was going to work.  I spent a couple of years reading biographies and jotting down notes observing the state of the world today.  After a few false starts, I finally found something that has a little traction.  Even then, it took me another year or so to finish.  It's a bit out there, but I'm actually kind of proud of it.

This play was formerly titled "The Madison Play".  I think the new title makes more sense.

Constitution Day was named as an honorable mention in East West Players' 2042: See Change Playwriting Competition.

Cast: 

• James - Male, 30's, of Asian descent
• Ida - Female, 30's, of Asian descent, James' sister
• Madison - Male, 40-50's,  of English descent.  The Founding Father.
• Henry - Male, 30's, of Caucasian descent. 

Setting: 
James' rundown apartment in Queens, NY. (and other places)  
Fall 2011.  

Description: 
James is alone in his apartment battling depression while trying to write an article about the American Constitution for a political blog. In between phone calls from his well meaning but overbearing sister, he debates Constitutional philosophy and today’s politics with an imaginary James Madison who seems to have intentions of his own.  Meanwhile, random tweets appear from Henry, a young lawyer with a great job and a great life; and was the object of James’ unrequited love many years ago.
